Introducing the Trash Bin

Recycle BinWhen we released support for domain-wide data retention rules in December, we ensured any deleted file could be recovered until the retention period expired by preventing the delete of that file’s folder. This was a simple approach that worked well in most cases but made it difficult for non-administrative users to fully control emptied folders.

With last night’s update we’ve resolved that inconvenience through the introduction of a “Trash Bin” to which deleted folders with deleted but unexpired (unpurged) files are automatically moved. The Trash Bin holds these deleted folders so that their deleted files may be recovered subject to the Domain’s data retention policy - but allows non-administrative uses to cleanup unwanted folders from those folders they control.

As always, we welcome your comments regarding this or any feature of our service. Please reach out with your feedback!

Microsoft Outlook AddIn now available

We’re pleased to announce the release of a Microsoft Outlook Add-In for FolderGrid. Outlook users can now securely attach files to email in a compliant manner directly from the familiar toolbar in Outlook.

Our FolderGrid Add-In seamlessly integrates with Microsoft Outlook to make sending large files easier with no extra steps required! Attachments are transparently secured on your FolderGrid and embedded as secured links in the body of your email - avoiding bouncebacks, Exchange Server storage limits, and attachment size restrictions.

Undelete and Data Retention Support

Recycle BinBy popular demand we’ve just deployed an upgrade that delivers undelete and domain-wide data retention support for FolderGrid. If you accidentally delete a file, recovery is as simple as right clicking the folder in which it was secured and choosing “Show Deleted“. From that view you can undelete any file for which you have full-control permissions.

Domain administrators can purge (completely remove all evidence of the file’s existence including associated metadata and audit logs) individual files from the deleted files view. Domain administrators also have access to a “Data Retention“ interface where domain-wide settings for the retention of deleted files can be enforced.

As always, we welcome your comments regarding this or any feature of our service. Please reach out with your feedback!

New Feature: Anonymous Uploads Support via Dropzones

We’re pleased to announce a new feature to support anonymous uploads by nonusers through a pre-configured and expiring dropzone. A dropzone allows a nonuser to upload files to a specific folder anonymously. Dropzones are accessed through randomized expiring links that permit the recipient to upload files without any FolderGrid user account or credentials.

To create a Dropzone in our default web client, right-click on the target folder and select “Share Publicly.” Select the number of hours the dropzone should be active before expiring and you will receive a randomized URL that is very difficult (but not impossible) to guess. Distribute this URL to those persons who you wish to have the ability to upload files to the target folder anonymously.

Several users have requested this ability to permit nonusers to upload files to designated folders on their FolderGrid - we hope you’ll find it useful as well and as always welcome any feedback!

New Feature: Personalized Favorite Folder Lists

We’re pleased to announce a new feature to support a personalized list of favorite folders for every FolderGrid user. Users can now maintain their own “Favorites” list for quickly referencing commonly used folders.

In our default web client Favorites act similar to “bookmarks” in a web browser. After selecting a folder simply choose “Add to Favorites” or “Remove from Favorites” as appropriate to manage your personalized Favorites list. Selecting a Favorite from the list will immediately select that folder in the folder tree and populate the file listing with its contents.

Several users have requested this ability to quickly open frequently accessed folders without the need to first traverse the folder tree. We hope you’ll find it useful as well and as always welcome any feedback!
